NAPHTHALENE SULPHONATE
High Purity Naphthalene Sulphonate Overview
General data
Naphthalene sulfonate (often as Sodium Naphthalene Sulfonate Formaldehyde, or SNF) is a yellowish-brown, water-soluble anionic polymer used primarily as a high-range water reducer (superplasticizer) in concrete to improve flowability and strength. It is also extensively used as a dispersing agent in textiles, agrochemicals, and industrial cleaners.
Key Uses and Applications:
- Construction & Concrete: Acts as a superplasticizer to create high-strength, low-permeability concrete, reducing water requirements by 10–25% while improving workability and reducing cracking. It is used in, for example, the Burj Khalifa and Three Gorges Dam projects.
- Gypsum/Drywall: Used in plasterboard/drywall manufacturing to reduce water in the stucco mix.
- Textile Industry: Serves as a dispersant for dyes and pigments, improving leveling and color uniformity in dyeing processes.
- Industrial Cleaners & Detergents: Acts as an anionic surfactant, breaking down grease, oil, and dirt in industrial, automotive, and household cleaning products.
- Agrochemicals: Used in agricultural formulations to enhance the wetting and dispersion of pesticides and fertilizers.
- Leather Tanning: Facilitates the uniform penetration of tanning agents and dyes.
- Properties and Characteristics:
- Dispersing Agent: Excellent ability to keep particles suspended in water.
- High Stability: Maintains effectiveness at high temperatures (above 100 °C) and over a wide pH range (pH 2–12).
- Compatibility: Compatible with various cements, admixtures, and water-based systems.
